Voice of the Mirror: Johnson either deluded or a cynical liar - even Tories will be revolted

Boris Johnson is deluded or a cynical liar when No10 disingenuously insists the Prime Minister believes he acted with “integrity and honesty” as London Mayor during his affair with Jennifer Arcuri.

Even many Tories will be revolted that the PM had sex with his mistress in the family home while his then-wife was away, cleaning the house to hide the cheating from a spouse who later divorced him.

And anybody who cares about standards in public life will be concerned the leader of the Conservatives did not declare the affair as Arcuri received a six-figure sum from public funds and was controversially allowed to go on official trips abroad.

Johnson, twice sacked for deceit, is too often a stranger to the truth and Downing Street’s complacent dismissal of evidence is the elitism of a sect treating decent people with contempt.

If he did act with “integrity and honesty”, he would be demanding a hearing to clear his name.

That Johnson does not speaks volumes.

United in fury

Impose another lockdown after the sacrifices of the past year and hope generated by vaccinations and Boris Johnson will be overwhelmed by protests.

The Prime Minister’s refusal to rule out fresh restrictions for once created a United Kingdom – a country of nations united after Johnson punctured the optimism of people in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

We may need to remain cautious, or humble as it was called by a usually-arrogant politician, but this must be the home straight to the resumption of the better parts of our lives.

The NHS mass vaccination programme is a passport to a great British summer.

Given a fright

What happened to container ship Ever Given will send shivers down the spines of families planning for barge holidays.

Being stuck in a UK canal would not halt trade but laughter from fellow skippers could have them battening down the hatches.
