Voice of the Mirror: Infighting over coronavirus crisis has paralysed Government

Infectious ineptitude

Does the Government have a viable plan for controlling Covid?

Nearly a third of people in England are now under some form of local lockdown. Yet an analysis by Labour shows that cases are continuing to rise in 19 of the 20 areas where additional restrictions have been put in place.

Boris Johnson yesterday could not explain the criteria for imposing local lockdowns, or what will be done if they are not working.

This is a critical stage in the second Covid wave. If ministers get this wrong, we could see more deaths and further economic damage.

Right now, the Government appears paralysed. Important decisions have been put on hold because ministers cannot agree. When lives are at stake, this is no time for Cabinet infighting and internal party wrangling.

An exasperated public is trying to do their best, but they are getting conflicting guidance.

Lockdown rules will only work with consent, but people’s willingness to comply is at risk due to this incompetence and indecision.

The HS2 line to Leeds has been put on hold, reports say (PA)

End of the line

This week, the Tories announced plans to set up a regional HQ in Leeds.

If they do go ahead with the idea, they won’t be travelling there by train. It was reported yesterday that the planned extension of the HS2 line to Leeds has been put on hold and will probably never be built.

This paper has been critical of the rising cost of the high-speed line, but we recognise its importance in improving transport links and regional economies. It is also a major opportunity to create jobs and provide training.

The fact this is now at risk makes a mockery of the Tories’ claim to be the party of the North.

The Conservatives should ditch the cheap, meaningless gestures and provide the investment that is so badly needed.

No mean feet

Scientists say that a leisurely daily stroll is just as effective as intensive exercise at fending off deadly diseases.

Staying healthy is literally a walk in the park.
