Voice of the Mirror: Indian variant not first time Tories have been behind curve on Covid

Scientists are becoming increasingly concerned about the spread of the Indian variant of Covid after the number of cases tripled in a week.

It is calculated to be 60% more transmissible than the dominant form of the virus and has taken root in a growing number of areas across the country. Unless checked, there are fears that it could delay the lifting of the final lockdown restrictions in England, due on June 21.

To try to contain the variant, one idea is for mass vaccinations in the affected areas for everyone aged 18 and over. This was a demand made by Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, more than 48 hours ago.

It is not the first time the Government has been behind the curve when it comes to Covid.

It took over a month after the Indian variant became a cause for concern for the country to be added to the red list of banned travel destinations.

If we want to protect people’s lives and save our summer then everything must be done to prevent this strain from spreading.

Cam off it..

David Cameron today provided a reminder of why few will regret that he is no longer Prime Minister.

His evidence to the Treasury select committee was glib, slippery and unconvincing.

He asked MPs to believe that his relentless lobbying was for the public good rather than a greedy attempt to get rich quick.

He claimed the lobbying rules he introduced had proven to be satisfactory when the reality is that his behaviour only came to light thanks to diligent journalism.

And he denied any knowledge that the company he was working for was on the brink of collapse.

He either knew about the state of Greensill’s finances or he could not be bothered to find out. Either way he looks a fool. His record in Government was inglorious and ignominious; his record since leaving office is even more shameful.
