Voice of the Mirror: 'Government must act to stop school holiday travel rip-off'

Travel companies more than doubling the price of vacations abroad during the school holidays is unacceptable.

Parents are being exploited and the industry must stop acting like parasites.

What is billed as a free market is not working for families when industry bosses are increasing prices by up to 81%.

Operators are taking advantage of the fact that families with school-age children can only take holidays at certain times.

Unless these companies voluntarily guarantee to hold down prices and avoid profiteering at the expense of so many workers on limited budgets, regulations must be brought in such as a cap on price rises.

We need the Government to act in the public interest and that extends to any situation where people are being ripped off by vested commercial interests.

Doubling the price of foreign holidays when school’s out is going way too far.

Sea the appeal

Our nation has many fantastic seaside resorts so it is a great shame that one in five children has never visited the coast.

Hard-up families in austerity Britain need help, and children from poorer backgrounds deserve a holiday as much as those in more comfortable homes.

That’s why the Daily Mirror is delighted to launch a summer appeal to give kids a break.

This is a win-win situation because more children getting to go on seaside holidays will also result in a boost for our resorts crying out for more visitors.

The generosity of Mirror readers is legendary and we guarantee every penny donated will be spent putting smiles on kids’ faces.

Vinnie’s pain

Vinnie Jones’ wife Tanya found the soft side of a football hard man and her death at just 53 is heartbreaking.

Cancer is cruel and indiscriminate. Sadly, the great strides being made to beat the disease haven’t yet gone far enough.
