Voice of the Mirror: Football fans are heroes for inspiring Super League backlash

The inspiring backlash from fans, players and managers highlights the isolation of Britain’s six greedy football club owners.

The depth of hostility against the grubby plot is illustrated by Chelsea and Manchester City now wishing to withdraw, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s criticism and Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson convening a summit of Premier League captains.

Add a united political opposition – Keir Starmer and Boris Johnson for once singing from the same hymn sheet – and this breakaway might be dead on arrival.

What is most impressive is the stand taken by the loyal fans of the clubs involved: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Spurs.

These supporters are heroes, the best of the best.

They are the beating heart of football, not profit-obsessed tycoons who buy and sell teams. And it is why they deserve to win.

Yes and low

In answering with a simple “Yes” then walking out, the Prime Minister appeared to inadvertently confirm for the first time his affair with Jennifer Arcuri.

And Boris Johnson unintentionally emphasised why he could struggle to justify the claim by No10 he acted with honesty and integrity.

Public funds and official trips for a mistress while he was still married, never mind having sex in the family home, raise serious questions about the probity of a tarnished leader.

Squaring Johnson’s immoral behaviour, not only with Arcuri but on many other issues too, is impossible with the Nolan Principles on the ethical standards expected in public life.

Embarrassed Johnson’s one-word reply and departure were a guilty admission.

Cool it, Boris

When he is usually full of hot air, Boris Johnson’s promise to cool global heating will justifiably be greeted with scepticism.

The Suffragettes with their “Deeds not Words” motto could give a cynical PM a history lesson when the future of the planet is at stake.
