Voice of the Mirror: First vaccine jabs give hope we may finally beat coronavirus

One shot at victory

Today is V-Day, the moment we have all been waiting for, when a vaccine against the virus may prove to be the beginning of the end of a terrible nightmare.

The first jabs give us genuine hope we will finally beat a pandemic which has killed tens of thousands and devastated the economy.

But there is also fear a Government that committed deadly errors will fail again.

If that happens, Boris Johnson and his Conservative MPs will never be forgiven.

NHS and public health experts must be in charge every step of the way or the work of brilliant scientists will be undermined.

We can all play our part by continuing to obey restrictions and by being inoculated when we are invited to be, ignoring the false scaremongering of crackpot anti-vaxxers.

V-Day is a day to celebrate and to keep our guard up.

Deal us in, PM

Crashing out of the European Union without a trade deal would be catastrophic for Britain and damaging to 27 neighbours, so an agreement is beneficial to all.

Boris Johnson must not be precious, and Michel Barnier and Ursula von der Leyen must be prepared to compromise during last-ditch talks in Brussels this week.

The stakes are too high for Johnson to cling to his pre-referendum plan. His lies and nostalgic images of sovereignty are threatening jobs and livelihoods.

We’re a country weakened by the Government’s mishandling of Covid-19 and by economic problems. We can’t afford no deal. We can’t afford Boris Johnson.

Kev pitches in

Rugby League inspiration Kevin Sinfield is an iron man with a big heart who ran seven marathons in a week, raising £1million to fight Motor Neurone Disease.

The Leeds Rhinos rugby director’s incredible support for former club colleague Rob Burrow, a victim of the terrible illness, demonstrates the power of friendship and sport for good
