Voice of the Mirror: Every parent will have relished the Duke of Sussex's joy

Let’s share in baby joy

Every parent will have relished the joy of an obviously proud Duke of Sussex as he beamed while announcing the birth of his and the Duchess of Sussex’s baby son.

The arrival of another great-grandchild for the Queen, a boy seventh in line to the throne after bumping Prince Andrew down to eight, is inevitably a public event.

And a royal baby of mixed heritage, his mother of African-American descent, is a major landmark for a hereditary monarchy, which today looks a little more like our gloriously multi-cultural country.

Harry, Meghan and their first child will be showstoppers wherever and whenever they appear, people straining in particular for a glimpse of the new addition.

And the injection of fresh life into such a traditional institution is good news for the Royal Family, with change paradoxically reinforcing stability.

Yet most folk will simply be pleased for a happy couple who have now gone from two to three. Best wishes to them all.

Toil & trouble

There must be no place in 21st Century Britain for grim giant warehouses likened to Victorian-era “Dark Satanic Mills”.

Complaints from trade unions about JD Sports and ASOS depots must be taken seriously in the interests of workers everywhere, following revelations about the number of ambulance call-outs for staff.

Big companies must be held to account for what happens on premises carrying their names, with laws enforced and employment rights strengthened where they are lacking.

Runaway profits must never be made at the expense of treating people decently.
