Voice of the Mirror: Emmerdale star Asan N'Jie's 'knife' rant an outrage

It beggars belief that a TV actor can play the role of a stabbing victim and discuss the grief caused by knife crime... then behave as Asan N’Jie did the other night.

At the plush London venue for the glittering TV Choice awards, the Emmerdale star made bloodcurdling threats to “knife you” and “kill you” to Hollyoaks actor Jamie Lomas.

N’Jie, who plays Ellis Chapman in the soap opera, had to be escorted out of the Hilton Park Hotel by security staff.

This is intolerable behaviour from someone in the public eye. The actors in soap operas are role models, for young people especially, and too many youngsters are dying in our streets from the brutal use of blades.

This incident cannot be brushed under the carpet. Personal and public apologies from N’Jie must be just the start.

Dark knight

A lot of people find Geoffrey Boycott intolerable and the cricket commentator is too often his own worst enemy.

His dismissal of campaigners questioning his knighthood when he has a criminal conviction for domestic violence is contemptible.

Putting down a women’s rights champion with the words, “I don’t give a toss about her, love” reveals a frightening lack of concern for women who are abused, beaten and sometimes murdered by angry men.

Despite his protestations of innocence his conviction stands, and if he is to be a knight of the realm, an honour based on chivalry, sympathy for the victims is more appropriate.

He must drop the arrogance and show some concern or the calls for his knighthood to be stripped will be relentless.

Licence to lie

When unions representing nearly six million workers demand no change to free TV licences for our over-75s, it underlines how out of touch the Tories are on this.

Blaming the BBC doesn’t wash when the Conservatives have broken their manifesto vow – and the whole country knows it.
