Voice of the Mirror: Eat, drink and be wary as UK eases out of lockdown

Reopening pubs and halving social distancing is welcome news to so many cooped-up people, but let’s not forget there is still a serious risk out there.

Unless individuals do their best to protect themselves and others, and businesses implement tough rules to minimise the spread of infection, more lives will be lost to Covid-19.

The public’s fears are heightened because our arrogant PM Boris Johnson has failed to accept his previous blunders during this crisis – a fatal error if he wants us to trust him now.

People’s desire to return to normal life, to enjoy a meal and a drink with loved ones after three months of lockdown, is understandable.

And some rules, such as the 14-day quarantine for arrivals to the UK, should be ditched.

But Britain has one of the highest excess death rates from coronavirus, and is facing the worst economic damage in the developed world.

So we need to be remain vigilant as we slowly return to a new kind of normal.

Blatant bigotry

Burnley's captain, manager and the club itself have condemned the bigoted group who flew the insulting and inflammatory banner before Monday’s match.

The Black Lives Matter movement does not mean, as some reactionaries try to claim, that you believe other lives do not matter.

Rather, it is an acceptance that too many people across the globe have endured racism for too long.

The banner’s organisers – one of whom has posed for photos with a far-right extremist – clearly have an issue with their team taking a knee in honour of the slain George Floyd.

The Burnley banner bigots need to listen to the stars, manager and bosses at their club.

Handy gadget

Watches that automatically time hand-washing for 20 seconds after detecting motion and the sound of water are exactly what we need right now.

Smartwatches have long since won out over traditional timepieces, and this new feature will see Apple clean up as the crisis rolls on.
