Voice of the Mirror: Do the decent thing Jenrick...from whichever one of your ivory towers

At the last count Robert Jenrick, the Housing and Communities Secretary, owned at least three properties.

This Sunday a policy comes into effect that could see tens of thousands of families kicked out of their one and only home.

That is when the temporary ban on landlords evicting tenants comes to an end.

Charities are warning that more than 200,000 renters are at risk of being made homeless in the run-up to winter as a result.

Many have fallen behind with their rent simply because they were furloughed or lost their jobs during the pandemic.

Evicting them will only worsen the housing crisis. Too many people are forced to live in sub-standard accommodation already.

The number of children living in B&Bs or temporary shelter has hit a 14-year high.

That figure is only going to rise unless the Communities Secretary changes his mind.

Mr Jenrick needs to leave whichever one of his three ivory towers he is currently residing in and do the decent thing.

He should extend the ban on evictions and come up with a plan to give people the safe and affordable housing they deserve.

Shock News

Millions turn to the BBC every night to find out what is happening in this country and around the world.

Many families plan their evening routines around the News at Six and News at Ten.

There are now fears these reliable fixtures in the broadcasting schedule could be swept away in the name of modernisation.

The BBC should resist such a change.

Viewers want news they can trust – at a time they can trust.

Clucky Brits

THE lockdown has seen a surprising surge in the number of households wanting to rehome chickens destined for slaughter.

The trend began during an egg shortage but that’s over now – meaning Brits are living up to our reputation as animal lovers.
