Voice of the Mirror: Coronavirus pandemic will test Britain's resilience like WWII

The next few weeks are going to be biggest test of this country’s resilience since the Second World War.

We have to brace ourselves for the loss of loved ones, major disruption to our daily lives and economic difficulties.

The consequences of the pandemic will be far-reaching, prolonged and severe. It could take months before life returns to normal.

The coronavirus has already caused the cancellation of major sporting events, concerts and hundreds of flights. Local and mayoral elections have been postponed for 12 months.

Many businesses will struggle to keep afloat as people stay away from shops, transport hubs and entertainment venues.

This will be an especially anxious time for the self-employed and millions of shift and part-time workers who do not have the comfort of guaranteed sick leave and sick pay.

The emergency measures announced in the Budget were a necessary first step but we may soon find they are insufficient.

The Government’s approach may also need to change as the virus continues to spread.

The priority should be to protect those most at risk and ensure the health service can cope with the exceptional pressures.

We should also remember those who could end up being unwitting victims. If schools close, millions of children will go without free school meals. Homeless people with symptoms of coronavirus are being turned away from shelters. Foodbanks and other charities will continue to need our support.

Above all, we must look out for each other. Think of your neighbour who may need help with shopping or childcare. If you have an elderly friend or relative please check they have food in their cupboard or if they want a prescription picking up from the local surgery.

In these dark times, we will need the light of kindness.
