Voice of the Mirror: Brits face worst of all worlds with Xmas lifting of restrictions

If there is any logic to the Government’s handling of Covid, it is hard to see it.

From Saturday some 38 million people in England will be living under Tier 3 restrictions.

Then four days later they will be allowed to ignore the rules so they can meet up with friends and family for Christmas.

Ministers have yet to explain why the Tier 3 measures are essential to contain the virus and protect the NHS but that there is no need to enforce them over the festive season.

To add to the confusion, the tiers seem to have been imposed almost arbitrarily.

People in Greater Manchester remain in the highest category despite having lower rates of infection than some Tier 2 areas.

The contradictory messages coming from the Government risk leaving the public baffled and resentful. If they start to lose faith in
the guidance, it gets more difficult to control the epidemic.

We now face the worst of all worlds: a rise in cases caused by the Christmas free-for-all and longer restrictions while we pay the price.

Jacob crackers

There is being out of touch and then there is being Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The Leader of the Commons sneered at Unicef for providing support to some of the poorest children in Britain (NurPhoto/PA Images)

This pampered Tory was born into privilege and given an expensive education.

He has made millions from finance and therefore is living proof that the one thing money cannot buy is common decency.

The Leader of the Commons sneered at Unicef for providing support to some of the poorest children in Britain. But it is his Tory government that should be ashamed.

If Mr Rees-Mogg had any empathy, he would act to improve the lives of his fellow citizens.

The fact that he does not shows what a cold-blooded, soulless excuse for a politician he is.

POTUS pouts

Donald Trump is reportedly refusing to leave the White House when Joe Biden is sworn in as the next US President.

The only solution is to wheel the Toddler-in-Chief out in his giant pram.
