Voice of the Mirror: Britain must be wary about post-Brexit trade deal with USA

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab was today granted the briefest of audiences with Donald Trump.

The US President, he claimed, has a “huge appetite” for a US-UK trade deal.

There is no doubt we need to strike a free trade agreement with the United States.

But it should not come at any price.

A post-Brexit Britain will enter these negotiations from a position of weakness. A lone country does not carry the same clout as a bloc of 28 nations.

Any attempts by the US to exploit this imbalance must be resisted. Our NHS is not for sale and we should not be forced to accept hormone-packed beef or chlorinated chicken.

We should also remember that a trade deal is not in Trump’s gift. The House of Representatives has said it will block a deal if Brexit threatens the Northern Ireland peace progress.

Our closest ally will not necessarily be our closest friend when we eventually sit round the negotiating table.

Ban this ‘sport’

Killing a wild animal with a high-powered rifle is not a sport.

It is a barbaric act that threatens the survival of vulnerable species.

So it is sickening that a British firm is making money by offering shooting tours under the name of conservation.

Elephants, giraffes and zebras are among the animals killed – all listed as vulnerable on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List. This is why the Mirror is campaigning for an end to trophy hunting.

The Government has launched a call for evidence with a view to bringing in a ban.

There is no need for the UK to drag its feet. The ban should be introduced now.

Bloody marvel

A woman with a rare blood type has saved dozens of lives around the world by making frequent donations.

Her kindness cannot be praised enough and is an inspiration to all of us to give blood.
