Voice of the Mirror: Breast op butcher probe must stop future rogue surgeons

How breast cancer surgeon Ian Paterson could have butchered so many women for so long causes grave concern.

A culture of “avoidance and denial” that was uncovered by an inquiry will add to the misery of hundreds who suffered at his cruel hands.

Fresh horrors may be discovered after the 11,000 patients he operated on at NHS and private hospitals in the West Midlands over 15 years are recalled for assessment.

Paterson, serving a 20-year jail term for 17 counts of wounding with intent, is a disgrace to a noble profession whose mission is to save and enhance lives, not ruin them.

Implementing in full the report into the scandal will, hopefully, stop another rogue surgeon running amok unchecked for a decade-and-a-half.

As he sits in prison, Paterson should hang his head in shame.

Dodgy motive

Locking people up for refusing to pay a TV licence and fine seems unnecessarily heavy-handed.

However we are right to question the motives behind a consultation over whether non-payment should stay a criminal offence.

Rabid Tories are bashing the BBC because they feel it doesn’t broadcast enough
Conservative Party propaganda and now under a cloak of fairness the sneaky party appears determined to undermine it. The Beeb fears a change could cost it £200million.

Blaming the BBC for a broken Tory promise to maintain free TV licences for all over-75s, clearly isn’t enough for them.

The answer is to find a way of defending the BBC without jailing people who refuse to pay.

Totally potty

Shropshire council must have a hole in its head for spending £1,000 a day on a potholes consultant.

The Daily Mirror won’t be charging for advising the Conservative authority to fill them in and stop pouring public money down a black hole.
