Voice of the Mirror: Boris Johnson was right to defy US over Huawei 5G decision

Right Huawei for UK to go

Letting China’s Huawei help build Britain’s transformative 5G network is a smart move by the Government.

Delay the programme and billions of pounds would have been lost.

The super-fast internet and mobile system will transform business and living, connecting the nation in ways few could have imagined a decade ago.

We have been assured safeguards will stop the Chinese Government using Huawei to steal our data and undermine defence.

Boris Johnson would have been a coward to fold under pressure from Donald Trump who is accused of exaggerating security threats.

The President clearly hoped to use Britain as a pawn in a wider US battle with China.

Trump’s aggressive approach showed the America First nationalist will attempt to bully Britain during Brexit trade talks.

With Huawei’s technology ahead of rivals, and cheaper, the risk is worth taking to introduce G5 widely and swiftly.

Hopefully in a few years we will wonder what the fuss was about.

Sale & farewell

Broadcasting has lost a true legend with the death of Nicholas Parsons.

The host of Sale of the Century and enemy of repetition was a star who loved to make us laugh without ever resorting to abuse.

Hard truths

Installing the flammable cladding on Grenfell Tower was a huge mistake (SWNS.com)

Installing flammable cladding on Grenfell was a catastrophic mistake.

It was also an outrageous gamble when firms knew the cladding wouldn’t last if a blaze spread to the outside.

Details emerging at the inquiry into the 2015 inferno which took 72 lives are distressing – but learning hard lessons is vital to prevent mistakes in the future.

One thing is crystal clear, dangerous materials that remain on hundreds of other flats must be removed.

After the London fire service was criticised during earlier hearings, we are finally discovering why Grenfell turned into an inferno.

This is a tragedy that could and should have been avoided.
