Voice of the Mirror: Boris Johnson's woolly relationship with the truth has come back to haunt him

Boris Johnson and the truth are rarely seen in the same room together.

Few will be surprised that his pledge to leave the EU on October 31 is mired in confusion.

Four days ago he told the Conservative Party conference that we would be out by that date.

But government papers submitted to a court in Scotland reveal he will ask for an extension if a deal isn’t agreed by October 19.

This doublespeak is typical of a PM who cares more about playing to the gallery than working for the best interests of the country.

The Prime Minister knows that he is bound by the Benn Act (PA)

At a time when business and workers need clarity, Mr Johnson can only deliver sound-bites but no substance.

The Prime Minister knows that he is bound by the Benn Act from leaving without a deal.

He should use whatever time is available to work with MPs to secure an agreement that protects jobs, firms and livelihoods.

It is time he put his country before his party and his personal ambitions.
