Dogged by allegations of inappropriate behaviour involving two, even three women, Boris Johnson’s sleazy past is finally catching up with him.
Sordid affairs and broken marriages have already put off many voters, and now this political crisis is overshadowing what was supposed to be an election launch.
Accusations he groped journalist Charlotte Edwardes and another woman – plus ongoing controversy around his American “friend with benefits” Jennifer Arcuri – have left the Prime Minister looking shifty and uncomfortable. Much like a politician who recognises he may no longer be able to brush off controversies.
Because there’s no concealing the disgust of Tory ministers. All but an unpleasant few will be privately squirming at being press-ganged into defending alleged behaviour that falls so far below the standards expected of a PM.
We can’t expect politicians to be saints, but claims of groping and handing cash favours to lovers fail every test of the public’s trust.
