Voice of the Mirror: Boris Johnson's proposal to review sugar tax just opportunism

Once again Boris Johnson has shown he has all the convictions of a weathervane.

His proposal to review the sugar levy is yet another example of his opportunism.

When Mayor of London he championed this tax as a way to tackle obesity. Now he claims it is an example of the “nanny state” that unfairly clobbers low-income families.

This sudden change of heart not only leaves him open to charges of hypocrisy. It raises questions about a conflict of interest given his chief of staff is also a lobbyist for a firm that could represent food and drinks firms.

The tax has proved remarkably effective in forcing firms to cut the amount of sugar in their products while at the same time helping to fund breakfast clubs and school sport.

If Mr Johnson genuinely wanted to do something to help the poorest he should start by ditching his proposed income tax cuts that will enrich high earners but do nothing for those on low incomes.

His flip-flopping and willingness to say anything in order to get elected only underlines his lack of fitness for high office.

They provide extra help for pupils, additional pastoral care and much-needed support for over-worked teachers.

They are especially important for children with special educational needs or disabilities.

A government that cared about education would value their work. But Department of Education figures show the number of TAs has been axed as schools struggle with Tory cuts.

Schools should not be having to beg for staff.

She has shown incredible bravery by returning to the scene of the abduction.

The grief will never go away but she deserves what happiness she can find in life.
