Voice of the Mirror: Boris Johnson is only a leader by name after arrogant abuse of power

Boris Johnson’s suspension of the House of Commons while his predecessor Theresa May showers honours on cronies is an abuse of power.

The Prime Minister’s untrustworthiness is the only reason we must wait until the end of November or early December for an election while he threatens to break the law and push us off a Brexit no-deal cliff on Halloween.

Equally the patronage exercised by a former PM rewarding her acolytes is a stain on an honours system that should recognise the deserving who selflessly contribute to society.

MPs who defeated Mr Johnson by demanding publication of his own Government’s assessment of the damage inflicted if he crashes Britain out is another sign this Tory leader is in office but not in power.

He is stewing in his own juices after the mother of backlashes against his arrogance.

Truth not spin

To clean his tarnished name Prince Andrew needs to answer questions over his friendship with a convicted paedophile – not seek PR advice.

The duke is unable to spin himself out of a scandal that is damaging the monarchy – as he is reportedly shunned by some organisations, particularly those working with young people.

Buckingham Palace statements and briefings by “friends” are no substitutes for public, on the record, replies to disturbing claims from young women who claim they were sexually exploited by friends of Jeffrey Epstein, the associate of the duke who killed himself in jail.

Prince Andrew, who flatly denies the allegations, must face his accusers.

Out of ‘orderrr’

Famous for his strangulated shouts of “orderrr”, John Bercow is a good Speaker of the House of Commons who champions MPs and Parliament.

History will be kinder than his enemies and it’s amusing those unfairly accusing him of bias include some of the most prejudiced right-wingers to lounge on Westminster’s benches.
