The exams U-turn is a humiliation for Boris Johnson and his ministers.
Pupil and parent power forced Westminster Tories to accept that students were cheated by flawed results produced by a defective algorithm – just as it did in the Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast administrations.
That sustained mass protests, criticism and complaints triggered the switch only underlines the incompetence of a Prime Minister who is a stranger to fairness and decency.
The PM and his Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson, must shoulder most of the blame for this shambles, while exam regular Ofqual is also in the dock.
It will not be forgotten or forgiven that this Government had to be dragged kicking and screaming into accepting that teacher assessments of GCSEs and A-levels are fairer than a defective formula marking down 40% of pupils.
Now the PM must lift the cap on student numbers and give universities the funding to accept students wrongly rejected last week.
No leader in recent experience has been as incompetent as Boris Johnson.
He is failing every leadership test, unleashing misery at a cost the country cannot afford.
We owe them
Britain owes a debt of honour to the 150 brave interpreters barred from coming here despite working for our troops during the Afghan War.
Allowing them into the country instead of abandoning them is a moral obligation.
Self-evidently able to speak English, they are very likely to do well and integrate swiftly but this really is about recognising that they risked their lives in the service of Britain.
To turn our backs on them would be a betrayal of everything we stand for.
