Voice of the Mirror: Boris Johnson has failed in Cummings fiasco

People have made up their own minds, as Boris Johnson wanted, and the verdict is the PM’s coronavirus rule-breaking rule maker, Dominic Cummings, must go.

The Tory leader is cynically protecting his hired friend and is losing any remaining goodwill, with the PM’s own warped judgement fast becoming the major issue in this fiasco.

Pollster YouGov finding that 71% think Cummings broke the rules and 59% want him to quit or be fired indicates a nation sick of an elite taking them for fools.

The resignation of a Government Minister and dozens of Tory MPs demanding the back of Cummings emphasises that this is a matter of principle, not party politics.

Former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt contradicting successor Matt Hancock by declaring Cummings did break lockdown rules – three times – was stating the obvious.

Johnson sticking two fingers up at the British public is provoking a backlash that could overwhelm him.

Toll is telling

Nudging 60,000 extra deaths across the UK during the coronavirus plague compared with this period in recent years points to a real toll way above the 37,000 declared in the daily official figures.

The numbers perishing is falling, but in care homes and the community, the mortality rate was much higher than acknowledged, the Government’s 20,000 “good outcome” ceiling shattered by Boris Johnson’s mistakes.

From the dithering and testing blunders in March to PPE shortages and the sacrifice of those care homes, the Prime Minister’s errors have been hugely costly to human life.

Songs of joy

The medical explanation is that music we like causes the brain to release dopamine, a feel-good chemical.

But for must of us, listening and singing along to the music that makes us happy is simply about lifting our spirits as well as our bodies – especially during lockdown.
