Voice of The Mirror: Boris Johnson desperate to avoid scrutiny over Brexit deal

PM is still so dodgy

The devil will be in the detail, but four-and-a-half years after Britain narrowly voted to leave the European Union, the expected trade deal proves we need our neighbours economically and politically.

It is also true that the 27 nations in the EU rely on Britain. They want to trade with us, so this is a two-way street.

If the deal is struck, a study of the final pages will show it required concessions, including on fishing where unrealistic expectations were raised and Boris Johnson is believed to have agreed that foreign vessels will continue trawling in British waters for years to come.

The Prime Minister hopes Christmas and Covid will divert public attention. He does not want to be under any scrutiny.

He divided the country for his own interests, namely to grab the keys to No10.

A no-deal Brexit would be far worse than this deal, but what we must not forget or forgive is that he hasn’t conjured up what he promised... including that invented £350million-a-week saving for the NHS.

We have got to make the best of it but Johnson has major questions to answer. As always, he’ll try to dodge them.

Hard sacrifice

Millions more people in England moving into the tighter Tier 4 lockdown on Boxing Day and the discovery of another virus mutation, this time from South Africa, are grim developments.

With the potential for the NHS to be overwhelmed, the Government had to act urgently.

It is very hard on families making sacrifices by staying apart on Christmas Day.

The restrictions are frustrating but the
alternative is far worse.

Sleigh it safe...

This has been a year like no other for all of us, except perhaps those who lived through the Second World War.

When we’ve got this far and Santa is on his way, enjoy the merriest Christmas possible within the restrictions, and please stay safe.
