Voice of the Mirror: Boris Johnson already hitting people's pockets before he's become PM

Boris Johnson is not even Prime Minister yet but he is already hitting people in their pockets.

His most recent comments on Brexit and his threat to suspend Parliament have sparked a sharp fall in the pound.

As a result, families jetting off this summer face a much more expensive holiday.

The currency markets reflect the growing uncertainty about a Johnson premiership.

He has yet to articulate how he intends to deliver Brexit beyond claiming it can be resolved by showing greater optimism.

There has been no attempt to wrestle with the complexities of the Irish border question or how the UK reaches new free trade agreements upon which jobs and prosperity depend.

He blithely waves the threat of a no-deal without a care for people’s livelihoods or the consequence for Britain’s economic standing.

With power comes responsibility. Johnson craves the former and runs from the latter.

Plea for donors

Hundreds of people are being denied the gift of life because of a fall in the number of organ transplants.

Heart and lung transplants were down by 20% last year because of a shortage of donors.

Hopefully, this trend will be reversed when the new opt out system comes into force in England in spring 2020 thanks to years of campaigning by the Mirror.

Since changing to that scheme in 2015, Wales has seen donation rates increase from 58% to 77% – the highest of the UK nations.

But it is essential that anyone who wishes to donate their organs discusses their wishes with their loved ones because a donation can take place only with family consent.

To transform lives, we need your help.
