Voice of the Mirror: Booster jabs for all adults is our best bet against Omicron threat

The boost of British...

Accelerating booster jabs by offering third doses to all over-18s and halving the gap between vaccines to three months, is a sensible response to the potential threat posed by the Omicron mutation.

“Better safe than sorry” is a responsible mantra to protect us while scientists decide how potent and transmissible this variant is.

Despite many people feeling safer, the pandemic never ended across the world any more than it did in Britain, where deaths top 1,000 a week and fresh infections average around 40,000 per day.

If we are to stop the death toll rocketing or the implementation of draconian restrictions, vaccinations are essential alongside the wearing of masks to suppress the spread of a virus that continues to be lethal.

In particular, we owe it to ourselves and others to be jabbed.

Unite & fight

Boris Johnson is flailing (REX/Shutterstock)

With a flailing Boris Johnson and divided Tories running a tired government, unity and verve are needed for Labour to be in with a decent shout at the next election.

Yesterday’s Labour reshuffle started badly with strains publicly exposed again between leader Keir Starmer and deputy Angela Rayner so the fresh team will be under the microscope during the next few weeks and months.

If Labour is to appeal to voters as an alternative government the party must pull together and sing from the same hymn sheet.

Tory sleaze, a social care con, the Great Train Robbery and a Peppa Pig’s ear of a speech by the PM put Labour back in the game.

The challenge now is to win every argument or history will ask not only why Johnson won again in 2023 or 2024, but why Labour lost.

Gale force fine

Storm Arwen did its worst, but Tan Hill Inn drinkers are out, while the I’m a Celeb crowd itch to get back into their castle.

Although with those grisly trials lying ahead the celebs might soon be hoping for another ill wind to put a permanent stop to the show.
