Time and again Boris Johnson pledged there would be no watering down of workers’ rights because of Brexit.
Now we learn Downing Street plans to scrap protections on pay, conditions and overtime.
We should not be surprised – it was always the plan of those wanting to leave the EU.
When they talked about cutting Brussels’ red tape, they meant removing hard-won rights that protect workers from exploitation.
Let’s not forget that four Cabinet members – Dominic Raab, Priti Patel, Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng – co-wrote a book criticising the UK’s “bloated state, high taxes and excessive regulation” and dismissed British workers as “among the worst idlers in the world”.
Mr Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, has also argued for small firms to be exempt from paying the minimum wage and maternity pay.
Nor should we forget that when Labour sought to ensure there was no watering down of labour laws, the Tories voted it down.
Forget about levelling up, the Tories are only interested in doing workers down.
