Voice of the Mirror: Automatic prison release of terrorists was a terrible mistake

It should not have taken the Conservatives 10 years to realise that the automatic early release of terrorists from prison was a terrible mistake.

The U-turn forced on ministers after the Streatham and London Bridge jihadi rampages hopefully means that public safety will now be considered before extremists are freed.

The Parole Board reviewing the state of mind of convicted terrorists might save lives.

It is also clear that prison rehabilitation and deradicalisation programmes need improvement – urgently.

The London Bridge murderer had completed such a programme and keeping Streatham attacker Sudesh Amman in jail may only have delayed, not prevented, his blood-spilling spree.

A fundamental rethink of how terrorists are dealt with is now unavoidable.

We must never allow these hate-filled fanatics to change our way of life.

Tin-pot tyrant

The solidarity displayed by rival newspapers, broadcasters and websites against a No10 attempt to ban the Daily Mirror and other organisations shows the importance of defending fair access to news.

Downing Street must never be allowed to dictate what you read, hear and see, or democracy is undermined. A state-approved media is the tool of despots the world over.

The Prime Minister, a former journalist, must immediately end the censorship imposed by his hirelings.

Grey crusade

Elderly revolutionaries vowing to jam the system with bogus applications for free TV licences are rebels with a cause.

The grey-power protesters are taking a stand against paying the new higher £157.50 rate – and demonstrate that you are never too old to stand up for what is right.
