Voice of the Mirror: Amazon injuries show unacceptable human cost of commercial success

Amaon does not look a safe place to work, with 622 staff off injured for at least a week over the last three years.

Its adverts showing smiling employees will be denounced as propaganda unless it cuts its attrition rate in depots – termed “fulfilment centres” by the US giant, when “assault courses” might be more appropriate.

Few would query Amazon’s popularity.

Yet the number of injuries raises questions about the treatment of a workforce under extreme pressure to meet orders.

And complaints are mounting that Amazon does not pay a fair amount of tax here.

Everybody who goes to work has a right to return home unharmed at the end of a shift.

The human cost of commercial success is unacceptable when work is dangerous.

Time to act

Catastrophically unprepared for heavier deluges triggered by climate change, the floods devastating homes and businesses will keep ruining lives unless we act now.

The smugness of Tory ministers defending both inaction and woeful responses shows the Government really does not get it and families will keep on suffering.

A decent government would immediately help swamped tenants and homeowners, strengthen flood defences and boost efforts to lead the world in halting global warming.

Alas we do not have a decent government. Boris Johnson and his bunch of incompetents are part of the problem, not the answer.

A true hero

Harry Gregg’s courage during the 1958 Munich air disaster marked him out as a true hero in a sport where the title is too often sprinkled on footballers who do no more than play a good game.

The Manchester United keeper’s efforts to rescue stricken teammates and club officials from a burning aeroplane showed he was a safe pair of hands – on and off the field.
