Vogue Ball bringing 'glitz and glamour' to Merseyside in Homotopia Festival

Homotopia, the annual arts and culture festival held in Liverpool, is coming to St Helens this year.

Families are invited to dress to impress and 'strut their stuff' as part of a fun-filled event in support of an LGBTQIA+ arts movement.

Formed in 2004, Homotopia is the UK’s longest-running annual LGBTQIA+ arts and culture festival which provides a platform for local, national and international LGBTQIA+ artists and creatives.

The festival takes place in late-October and throughout November every year and features a mixture of theatre, dance, film, photography, art, cabaret and debate at numerous venues across Liverpool - and this year it will be coming to the neighbouring borough.

Homotopia will be landing in St Helens from November 9 with a programme celebrating LGBTQIA culture and Queer joy through creativity, dance, performance and interaction.

As part of the celebrations, St Helens Borough council will be bringing families the ‘Family Vogue Ball’ which will feature a mixture of theatre and ballroom.

The Vogue Ball will see four family houses go head-to-head through a series of cat walking, dancing and lip syncing in a bid to be crowned the overall winner by audience members.

Councillor Anthony Burns, St Helens Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Culture and Heritage, said: “As a council we are committed to celebrating and raising awareness of our LGBTQIA+ community, holding events like this as well as a range of other diverse arts projects through our fantastic library service.

“Whether you just want to join in the fun or have a passion to pose, come along and show off your own magnificence by dressing up and help crown the winning house.”

Taking place in St Helens Library on Saturday, November 13 between 2.30 - 3.30pm, the Family Vogue Ball is presented by St Helens Borough Council’s Library Service in partnership with Citadel Arts as part of the award-winning Cultural Hubs: Arts in Libraries programme.

Other highlights of the borough's events during the festival include ‘St Helens Queer Creative Meetup’ where people are invited to attend for a friendly meetup with local LGBTQIA artists, makers and creators.

Tickets for the Vogue Ball, which can be purchased for audience members aged 4-years and over, cost £3 each or £9 for a family of four which can be purchased in St Helens Library or online here.
