Vogel: Lakers lineup not set despite LeBron at point guard report

The idea of starting LeBron James at point guard is not a unique one, nor is it something his teams have shied away from. But nevertheless, Lakers head coach Frank Vogel says it’s too far away from the start of the season to start talking about his team’s starting lineup, despite the report from Yahoo’s Chris Haynes that the Lakers will start James at the point.

During an appearance at the Las Vegas Summer League on ESPN2, Vogel said that the Lakers do not have a starting lineup set and that the rumors of LeBron James being the team’s starting point guard are premature.

If you’ve watched LeBron James for any period of time or understood the team’s performance when he is the lead decision maker knows that whatever position he plays is a matter of semantics. Whether he’s playing alongside another point guard or not, he will control the offense and be the maestro of whatever it is the Lakers try to do offensively.

With an offseason that prioritized outside shooting above all else, the Lakers roster is suited to go with LeBron at point guard surrounded by 3-and-D players on the wing. However, Vogel is doing the smart thing by not putting himself in a box with LeBron as the starting point guard more than two months before the Lakers head into training camp.
