Vodafone told to pay disputed Indian tax bill in 30 days

Vodafone shares have slipped 1p to 166p after Indian tax authorities told the company it had to pay a contentious $2.53bn bill within 30 days.

The move follows an Indian court ruling in September that the company was liable for the payment, which relates to its 2007 purchase of Hutchison Whampoa's mobile business in the country. But Vodafone maintains it is not liable for any tax on the deal, and the legal battle is far from over. Next Monday the supreme court is due to set a date for hearing the company's appeal.
