VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is preparing an action plan to initiate stringent action against the hawkers and business units which are operating illegally by occupying busy roads and causing congestion at major traffic junctions in the city. Following several complaints from denizens, the VMC launched a drive to identify the reasons for frequent traffic congestion in the city.
The town planning wing found stalls set up by business units and hawkers on busy roads to be the major reason for traffic problems in the city.
VMC commissioner Swapnil Dinakar himself swung into action and noticed that hawkers occupied the main road at fruit market road. He directed sanitation wing authorities to impose fines on vendors who are dumping garbage on roads. “Vendors should not occupy the main roads for their business activity. We will not spare the hawkers and pushcarts which are causing traffic jams. We will also take action on shops dumping garbage on streets,” Swapnil Dinakar said.
The planning wing of VMC has started a joint operation with city police to clear illegal business units on main roads.
Meanwhile, VMC has once again revived the ‘hawkers’ zone’ proposal. Officials have been focusing on identifying special areas to sanction cards for the hawkers to conduct business activities.
On the other hand, VMC has launched a weekly cleanliness drive called ‘Clean and Green.’ In a bid to keep offices clean and pleasant, Swapnil Dinakar introduced the drive on every Saturday in which higher officials to lower grade officials will clean the offices.
