VMAs most outrageous outfits: Snakes, superheroes and see-through dresses

When it comes to bold outfits, the VMA red carpet often acts as more of a catwalk.

This year's awards didn't disappoint as the eye-catching ensembles really stood out.

One of the first to arrive was Ava Max and the Sweet but Psycho singer didn't disappoint.

She looked like a superhero as she wowed fans with a red cape and and a part-silver suit.

The blonde wasn't the only star to shine thanks to their outrageous dress sense.

Well, it wasn't the clothes Tana Mongeau was wearing that got the camera bulbs flashing.

The controversial YouTuber wore a big white python - just like the one Britney Spears' took to the stage with during her iconic VMA performance of I’m A Slave 4 U.

Musician Mariahlynn turned heads again at the Prudential Center in New Jersey as she wore a very revealing sheer black dress.

Peppermint also grabbed attention in a light blue jumpsuit - setting it off perfectly with a crown.

She left very little to the imagination as the purple-haired beauty certainly stole focus.

Prince Derek Doll didn't disappoint with an incredible effort which included around 100 bird feathers.

There were a lot of questions about Brit Joey Essex.

Sporting a very casual pair of light jeans, the TOWIE star's half-and-half shirt also raised an eyebrow or two.

"Why is Joey Essex there and why is wearing the "Two Face's Hawaiian Vacation" collection?" asked on on twitter.

"As if Joey Essex just turned up I wonder what America are thinking!" added another.

There was plenty to keep the snappers busy!
