It’s official, the red carpet is really back.
Amongst the uncertainties of the past two years, one question bouncing around was on the relevance of the carpet circus. Are people really interested? Did it all get a bit much?
Well last night, in what was one of the biggest star reunions to date, one thing was clear - it’s here to stay.
At the Video Music Awards, which began in 1984 as an alternative to the Grammys, the stellar cast of music industry A-Listers did not skimp on their looks.
Leading the power purple brigade was Lil Nas X, who took home the Video of the Year award with his angels and demons ‘MONTERO’ video. The singer came in a crystal studded lilac suit complete with full train by Versace. Meanwhile Kasey Musgraves, the Country singer, caught eyes in new Valentino couture; she sported a purple mini dress with a lampshade-sized feather hat by Philip Treacy, and bicep length red gloves.
Couple dressing made its return. In the ilk of Posh and Becks’ matching leather, Kourtney Kardashian and boyfriend Travis Barker took to their first carpet together; Kourtney in a strapless, laced leather mini, Travis in black tailoring with punk spikes. But the pair of pros, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, swept the floor. Megan came in a sheer Mugler gown and sparkling thong, Kelly in a full-sequined, ruby shade Dolce & Gabbana suit with coordinating shirt.
The corset craze continued, led by Camila Cabello who wore a Alexis Mabille pink satin, boned top with red bow, paired with full length red skirt. Doja Cat, who hosted the night, posed for paps in a black corset by Vivienne Westwood, worn with red Pleaser heels and thigh length latex stockings (she later appeared in a string of off-the-wall looks, including a padded gown which enveloped her face. Think caterpillar meets sleeping bag).
Young, London-based designers were also able to secure some spots. Miss Sohee, the South Korean designer who graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2020, dressed the Brazilian star Annita, while a breakthrough came from Patrycja Pagas, who studied at the London College of Fashion, and dressed singer Normani in a cropped white power-shoulder jacket.
A surprise for the evening? Madonna continuing her BDSM streak as she appeared on stage in a full Burberry trench, before peeling it off to reveal a leather maid’s outfit, set with straps, fishnets and fingerless gloves. Come on, Vogue.
