Well that was a manic couple of hours. Nicki Minaj’s opening performance started the night off as a conciliatory affair with Taylor Swift on stage too. The Weeknd was impressive live, as were Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

Demi Lovato sank rather than swam on the outdoor stage. Taylor Swift took away three Moonmen, including best video for Bad Blood. Nicki Minaj called out Miley Cyrus for making comments about her in the press.

Oh, yeah and Kanye West said he was going to run for president in 2020, and Miley Cyrus released her new album for free. Not too shabby then. MTV will be over the moon with that. It had enough standout moments to dominate the news cycle for at least the next 24 hours. Cyrus was a success as host. The live performances were mostly spot on with only a couple of slip ups. A success.

That’s it for me now. We’ll have our news story up shortly.

Good night and thanks for reading.

Miley Cyrus makes a joke about Kanye being stoned and Kim Kardashian’s nipples.

Segue to John Legend talking about Paul Robeson, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan and people who shouldn’t be anywhere near a sentence with the name Miley Cyrus in it.

Then Pharrell plays Freedom on the outdoor stage … the stage looks like something from an Off-Broadway production

He’s just said he’s going to run for President in 2020. I have no idea what that meant but it was bloody brilliant

If you want a reference for this Dr Gonzo from Fear and Loathing is pretty spot on …

“Listen to the kids,” he says. (Did someone say Messianic?) Now he’s reminiscing about the incident with Swift in 2009. He says he thinks about the conversations he has with his daughter about orange juice in the grocery store.

Now he’s on about a baseball game where 60,000 people booed him. If he had to do it all again what would he have done? Worn a leather shirt, drank half a bottle of Hennessy?

This is genuinely baffling …

He’s breaking down why he went on stage that night, and not really explaining it. He’s on about Cee-lo and Justin Timberlake crying at the Grammys. I don’t have a clue.

He looks really upset about something. Oh and Jaden Smith just did a black power salute …

And now … Taylor Swift is here: “I first met Kanye West six years ago at this show actually.” Since they’ve had a lot of time to talk about it apparently. College Dropout was the first album she bought with her brother on iTunes AGED 12!

This is pretty tortured. Now she’s riffing on their 2009, er, incident.

Cue shots of his videos to the beat of Runaway, which itself became the inspiration for a 34-minute short film …

Watch-along fun (AKA drinking games)

Booze
Booze Photograph: Alamy

Unsurprisingly for an awards show with a host who is want to stick her tongue out, twerk and generally be the centre of attention, there are quite a few drinking games popping up online for those who want to have a bit of fun while watching. MTV released this cryptic code.

I’m not sure what a dog, a slice of pizza, a smartphone, a lolly pop, a vintage TV (which could never deal with a digital signal), and two slightly creepy children have to do with tonight, but if you can figure it out good on you.

Actual drinking games include this from @HOLLYWOOD

GQ hired an illustrator for their drinking game replete with images of Ed Sheeran’s dimples consuming the Microsoft Theatre and Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill snogging. Honestly, check it out. It’s pretty impressive.

http://www.gq.com/story/miley-cyrus-vmas-2015-drinking-game

Entertainment Weekly went all out with a PDF game which you can print out. Players are doomed on that one with rules such as drink whenever Miley sticks her tongue out and whenever Kim Kardashian takes a selfie … better have your excuse ready for why you can’t come to work sorted.

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/08/29/vmas-drinking-game

Newsweek’s is pretty similar with rules such as drink whenever… censorship is detected and Kanye West looks grumpy. I give that one a C-.

http://www.newsweek.com/presenting-unofficial-vma-drinking-game-367138

Billboard’s is the best. It’s in the form of a flowchart with sections divided by the number of sips required. The coup de grace comes if Kanye West and Taylor Swift interact, at that point you need to finish your drink.

Jeremy Scott: Primer

If you’re watching this with pals and want to sound clever have a look at Alex’s guide to Jeremy Scott. The man with the colourful suit who redesigned the Moonman this year.

Fashion designer Jeremy Scott (L) and Host Miley Cyrus

Born and raised in Missouri, Jeremy Scott moved to Paris to make his fortune as a fashion designer in the late-90s, where none other than Karl Lagerfeld nominated him as the person who could succeed him at Chanel. At the beginning of the last decade however, he decided to chuck in the Parisian fashion world to move to LA. The reason was partly because of the huge popularity his flamboyant and knowingly trashy designs have always had with pop stars - as this Observer article says, he was responsible for such big pop and fashion moments as Britney’s air hostess outfit in the video to Toxic and Madonna’s military gear in the banned promo for American Life (not to mention the Adidas trainers with wings worn by everyone from Jedward upwards).

In the past few years, as pop stars like Rihanna and Lady Gaga have made avant garde fashion an essential ingredient of their appeal, Scott’s stock has risen higher than ever - for instance, he made Katy Perry’s outfits for her Super Bowl performance, and is now creative director of the Moschino label. Which makes his appearance on the VMA awards with Miley barely clad in one of his designs entirely of a piece with the rest of his career.

Why has this year's build up been different?

Pals: Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj
Pals: Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj Photograph: AP

This is pretty drab at the moment. So here’s some background info …

Despite Miley Cyrus trying to grab headlines by sticking her tongue out and essentially being part of a horrible fever nightmare, the falling out between (or perhaps more importantly the discussion after) Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift was this year’s big news. After Minaj didn’t get a video of the year nomination, she tweeted “If I was a different “kind” of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well”.

Taylor Swift took that to be a dig at her resulting in this tweet: “I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.” That set “Twitter ablaze” as I believe some people say with Katy Perry and Piers Morgan chipping in. I’ll save you any more details (feel free to click on a hyperlink and lose yourself to month’s old arguments), but perhaps the most pertinent piece came from Nosheen Iqbal who explained some of the nuances of the debate:

The broader point Minaj is making is clear: throughout music history, black women aren’t recognised in the popular music canon in the same way their white counterparts are. As Minaj tweeted: “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year … I’m not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it.”

Yet without Swift making the story about her, Minaj’s tweets would likely have been talked about by sections of Twitter, music journalists and fans, before everyone shrugged and moved on. The wider reporting of the story has since twisted what is a valid conversation – about what makes a white artist outstanding, and why a black artist isn’t allowed to compete on the same terms. The coverage has reduced the debate to a catfight between two massive female stars, where Swift is the winner, taking down another woman who needs to know her place. It is insidious and crass.

In this retelling, Minaj is archetyped as the angry black woman, while Swift is bizarrely cast as the feminist hero. Pictures – deliberately selected, remember – to illustrate the story online by Glamour magazine, the Daily Mail, andEntertainment Weekly (some of them since deleted) show Minaj pulling faces or looking daft, or simply focus on her bum. The underlying message is that she’s wacky, unhinged and clearly the hyper-sensitive loser here. Ones of Swift, by comparison, show her looking soft, delicate and “unthreatening” – the victim under attack.

It didn’t stop at picture editing. Consider the bias on show when Glamour tweeted its take: “@taylorswift13 shut down @NICKIMINAJ on Twitter and it was WONDERFUL.” A sentence that embodies everything wrong with white feminism’s refusal to acknowledge, let alone understand, that unless “the struggle” in 2015 is intersectional (you know, taking in priorities that aren’t just about white women in the west serving white women in the west), it is irrelevant. To no credit, Glamour later retweeted the story as: “@taylorswift13 and @NICKIMINAJ embroiled in Twitter row.”

Since the falling out everyone has made up (including Taylor Swift and Kanye West), but at an awards show where appropriation has been a take away recently it’ll be interesting if MTV allow for anything that even nods to it.

They shuffle the lads on for a 10 second chat and then we’re off to discuss the bold eyes that have been seen on the catwalk. I forgot what these pre-shows are like … embarrassing for everyone involved
