Russian president Vladimir Putin has said Donald Trump’s impeachment is far-fetched and predicts that the US Senate will reject it.
Mr Putin said on Thursday at his annual news conference in Moscow that the move is a continuation of the Democrats' fight against President Trump.
He predicted the impeachment motion will be rejected by the Senate.
Mr Putin said that "the party that lost the election is continuing the fight by other means."
He likened the impeachment to the earlier US probe into Trump's collusion with Russia, which he downplayed as being groundless.
The Russian premier added that the effort to remove his American counterpart "is yet to pass the Senate where the Republicans have a majority."
He added that "they will be unlikely to remove a representative of their own party from office on what seems to me an absolutely far-fetched reason."
Mr Trump was impeached on Wednesday by the House of Representatives with two articles: abuse of power and obstructing congress
He will likely face a trial in the republican controlled Senate in the New Year.
The US President has branded the proceedings against him as "a suicide march" for the Democratic party.
Despite the action against him, President Trump's polling figures have gone up slightly in recent months.
Speaking on the recent doping ban Russian President Putin said on Thursday the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) four-year barring of Russia from international sporting competition was not justified.
He said bans should be handed out on an individual, not collective, basis.
President Putin said the decision was political and not fair.
