Vladimir Putin is barred from a pub in Burton-on-Trent

Vladimir Putin has been barred from a pub in Burton-on-Trent. Sam Rice, landlady of the Loaf and Cheese in the Staffordshire town, took the decision after her regular punters, upset with the Russian president's invasion of Ukraine, threatened to "wreck" him if he ever stepped into the hostelry.

It is the latest in a long line of sanctions that have been imposed on Putin with Mastercard and Visa having stopped the use of their credit cards in shops and at ATMs in Russia. The country has also been kicked out of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, while the national football team will not be permitted to play at the World Cup finals in November and the Formula 1 grand prix, originally scheduled for Sochi in September, has been cancelled.

On her decision to bar Putin, Ms Rice told StaffordshireLive : "It is absolutely wrong what he is doing and it is all my customers are talking about at the moment. They said if he came in they would wreck him."
