Vladimir Putin delivers chilling warning after unveiling new hypersonic missile

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has announced his country have produced a ground-based version of the Zircon hypersonic rocket .

The deadly Avangard missile has a velocity "several" times higher than the speed of sound.

Russia is the only country in the world that has hypersonic weapons, he says, and will be deployed soon.

The Kremlin leader has previously suggested the nuclear-capable weapon strikes “like a  meteorite ” and is unstoppable by any defence system.

Putin has claimed that for first time ever, Russia now has the edge in designing a new strength of weapons.

The United States are one of a number of countries to also work on designing them, according to reports.

Putin feels that he is no longer playing catching up with the US.

According to TVZvezda , he said: "These are weapon of the future, capable of penetrating both existing and prospective missile defense systems.

“We are planning to work on other systems, on the land and sea-based Zircon hypersonic missiles.”

It is a Russia’s drive to develop “new types of military equipment for modern and future strategic missiles”.

The deployment will come a year after Putin said: “On my instructions, the Ministry of Defence prepared and conducted a final test of this system.

"This has just been completed with absolute success.”

He called it a “new type of strategic weapon”.

Late last month the Russians showed the Avangard to US inspectors under the provisions of the New START treaty.
