After an extremely successful Yayoi Kusama exhibition, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) will be celebrating in the best of both fashion worlds with a fierce Westwood/Kawakubo summer extravaganza.
From December 7, 2025, to Sunday, April 19, 2026, the NGV will be housing more than 140 designs made by the late Vivienne Westwood and Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo.
Some of the iconic pieces to be featured in the exhibit have been sourced from places like New York’s Metropolitan Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Palais Galliera, the Vivienne Westwood Archive and some from its own collection.
Pieces that are set to be included are Sarah Jessica Parker‘s wedding gown from Sex and the City: The Movie, pieces worn by The Sex Pistols and Siouxsie Sioux and Rihanna‘s floral 2017 Met Gala Outfit, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

It’s truly going to be a fashion fiend’s dream! Hopefully, someone doesn’t go Sandra Bullock Ocean’s 8 on the event… (I’m joking for legal purposes).
While Westwood and Kawakubo are two different designers, their pieces unite them as they both utilise their craft to produce thought-provoking pieces that challenge the norm.
As most fashion heads would know, Westwood rose to prominence for her provocative and daring contributions to London’s ’70s punk scene. Since establishing Comme des Garçons in 1981, Kawakubo has both excited and provoked the industry through her avant-garde designs.

Westwood/Kawakubo at NGV will be exploring five structuring themes, including: Punk and Provocation, Rupture, Reinvention and The Body and The Power of Clothes. These themes extensively examine Westwood and Kawakubo’s careers and how their contributions have reshaped the fashion industry.
The giant NGV collaboration comes after Kusama’s blockbuster exhibit, which became the most visited art exhibition in Australian history, per ABC News.
“We can only try to exceed those numbers, right?” Dani Whitfeld, NGV’s curator of fashion and textiles, told the publication.
“What you’re hoping for with these exhibitions is that people that maybe don’t know these designers come along and learn something and walk away feeling inspired.”
Adding to that excitement, Westwood/Kawakubo will be the first time in 20 years that Westwood’s pieces will be exhibited Down Under.
While I may not be the biggest fashion baddie walking around, this exhibition is definitely one to attend!
Hang tight, Melbourne, I’m on my way!!
