Vivid violet Higo camellias bloom in Tokyo
At the Higo Hosokawa Garden in the Mejirodai area of Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, violet Higo camellias from Kumamoto Prefecture are approaching their peak viewing season.
According to the garden, Higo camellias are one of the "six flowers of Higo," the former name of Kumamoto Prefecture, that have been selectively bred since the Edo period. Next to the Shoseikaku building on the west side of the garden there are trees measuring about three meters in height.
More than 10 camellia blooms, roughly 10 centimeters in diameter each, have flowered so far and been enjoyed by visitors to the garden. The best time to see these flowers will be up until the end of this month. The garden is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there is no admission fee.
