The Australian Ballet’s Vitesse features a triptych of cutting edge contemporary dance works. Christopher Wheeldon’s DGV (Danse à Grande Vitesse) was first created for the inauguration of the north European line of the TGV. Inspired by the breakneck speed of modern transport, it is set to a score by British composer Michael Nyman.
Inspired by German expressionist Edvard Munch’s painting of a woman on an isolated beach, Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián’s work Forgotten Land explores how memories, events and people are lost through time. With the help of Benjamin Britten’s brooding score and the haunting seascape set, the work conjures up a sense of desolation.
William Forsyth’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated changed ballet forever as it extended ballet technique at a time when classical choreography was the norm. Starring Sylvie Guillem, it opened at Paris’s Opera Garnier in 1987 and made stars of the raw and ferocious dancers Forsyth set on the stage.
