Vitesse issue new statement after UEFA confirm postponed Tottenham vs Rennes tie won't be played

Vitesse Arnhem have confirmed they are "in contact with UEFA" as they await the verdict over Tottenham's postponed Europa Conference League game vs Rennes.

Heading into the final fixture of Group G in a battle with Tottenham for second place, Spurs' match against the French side didn't take place due to a Covid outbreak at the club.

With Rennes, who had arrived in the capital on Wednesday evening shortly before Tottenham released an official statement regarding the fixture, clearly unhappy about the situation, Vitesse also had their say on the match and questioned the sporting integrity of the competition.

The Eredivisie side did take to the pitch on Thursday evening as they beat NS Mura 3-1, thus seeing them leapfrog Tottenham in the standings having played one game more.

Now facing a nervous wait to see if they progress or not, the club issued a further statement on Saturday after UEFA confirmed in a statement of their own that Tottenham vs Rennes will now not take place after the sides could not agree on a new date.

Confirming that they are in contact with UEFA over what happens next, Vitesse are still expecting to be in Monday's draw for the knockout play-off round as it could "take a few more days" before a decision is reached.

"Vitesse has been in the waiting room of the UEFA Europa Conference League since the 3-1 victory over NŠ Mura, because the game between Tottenham Hotspur and Stade Rennais FC was cancelled after a Corona outbreak," read a statement on their official website.

"On Saturday it became clear that this game has been definitively cancelled, but at the same time Vitesse is still awaiting a decision about the exact consequences of this.

"Tottenham Hotspur vs Stade Rennais FC will definitely no longer be played, because no alternative date could be found in consultation with both clubs in recent days.

"The situation is now in the hands of the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary body, which will make a decision on the further course of Group G in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

"Vitesse is in contact with UEFA, but it could take a few more days before the European Football Association's disciplinary committee makes a decision.

"There is therefore a good chance that two clubs ('Vitesse/Tottenham Hotspur') will be in one ball next Monday at 2pm (CET) in the draw for the next round.

"The numbers two of the group stage will play in an intermediate round against the numbers three of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday 17 and Thursday 24 February."

Given the initial uncertainty over what exactly would happen with Tottenham's game against Rennes, UEFA provided an update earlier on Saturday morning.

“Following a COVID-19 outbreak in the team of Tottenham Hotspur FC ahead of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage match against Stade Rennais FC, scheduled to take place on 9 December 2021 in London, the match could not take place," read a statement from UEFA.

"In accordance with Annex J of the UEFA Europa Conference League regulations, UEFA, in cooperation with the two clubs tried to find a viable solution in order to reschedule the match, so as to ensure the group stage could be completed accordingly.

"Unfortunately, despite all efforts, a solution that could work for both clubs could not be found.

"As a consequence, the match can no longer be played and the matter will, therefore, be referred to the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for a decision to be taken in accordance with Annex J of the above-mentioned competition regulations."
