Vitesse chief breaks silence after UEFA finally come to decision over Tottenham vs Rennes

Vitesse general director Pascal van Wijk does not believe an appeal will follow after Tottenham crashed out of the Europa Conference League following UEFA's outcome over their postponed game vs Rennes.

Vying with Vitesse for second place in Group G and a spot in the knockout round play-off, Spurs unfortunately couldn't take to the field against the French side due to a Covid outbreak at the club.

The Eredivisie team had their say on the situation following the postponement and questioned the sporting integrity of the competition as they believed both games should have been played at exactly the same time.

UEFA then confirmed two days after that their Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body would make a final decision over the match as both teams couldn't agree on a new date for the showdown to be played.

With the Arnhem-based club nervously waiting on following their 3-1 win over NS Mura that saw them leapfrog Spurs in the standings, UEFA finally confirmed on Monday morning that Rennes have been awarded a 3-0 win as they deemed that Antonio Conte's men forfeited the match.

A decision that went down very well in the Netherlands as Vitesse now progress through to face Rapid Wien, Van Wijk stated that, in theory, an appeal could follow but that doesn't appear to be the case based on the first signals.

"It was a special and difficult situation, in which we would have found a different decision difficult to stomach," he explained to the club's official website.

“The last eleven days have been bizarre, of course. We managed to beat NS Mura 3-1, but at first we had no idea whether we could be happy with that or not.

"Normally you immediately know where you stand after a match or competition, but this time it was an unreal situation.”

Speaking about the situation at Tottenham that saw the Rennes match called off and what could potentially happen next, he added: “On the eve of the climax in the Conference League, there was a corona outbreak at Tottenham Hotspur. Provided that, of course, that is very annoying for Spurs.

“This annoying situation soon resulted in a very undesirable situation. Although the interests for both clubs were great and they were also heavily intertwined, the game in London was cancelled, but we had to take action ourselves. And that while the rules prescribe that games must be played simultaneously on the last day of play.

"Because we 'normally' played against NS Mura, there could possibly be an unfair and uneven playing field, and therefore also a major sporting disadvantage for Vitesse. But we played, won and waited for the situation.

"We are happy that the confirmation has now come, although of course it remains a strange end to the group stage.

"In addition, an appeal could in theory follow, although based on the first signals, that does not appear to be happening.”

He added: “An achievement that anyone with a yellow-black heart can be extremely proud of.

“It is also a huge compliment to our players and staff. Vitesse is on the map internationally.

"We have expressed this season that we believe in more and we have put action into these words.”
