'Vital, undroppable' - How Nottingham Forest's strongest XI is starting to shape up

Nottingham Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi rung the changes in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night - six in total.

It was, he said afterwards, against Arsenal.

But did any of those who came into the side give the Frenchman food for thought amid a 5-0 thumping, and what does that mean for the Reds’ first-choice XI now the focus is very much on the Championship?

We take a look at how Forest’s strongest line-up is starting to shape up.

Goalkeeper

Can’t look past Brice Samba right now. He’s started to make the No.1 spot his own.

Arijanet Muric got a runout at the Emirates Stadium and while conceding five goals was a little harsh on Forest overall, it’s still difficult to see how the Manchester City loanee will have done enough to unseat Samba come Friday’s trip to Stoke City.

The latter’s experience shows when he’s between the posts, and he’s looked a cool, calm and composed figure.

Defence

Right-back is pretty simple at the moment, Matty Cash is the only real option. And he’s been doing a decent job - even against the Gunners.

Centre-back too, is straight forward. Joe Worrall and Michael Dawson have made themselves undroppable for the time being. They’ve been immense.

There were mitigating factors for Chema and Tobias Figueiredo on Tuesday night. They hadn’t started a match together before, both have seen very little game time and they were up against top-class opposition. Still, they’d have needed to play out of their skins to have a chance of breaking up the Worrall-Dawson partnership any time soon.

Left-back is slightly trickier. More often than not, Jack Robinson has been a steady performer. He had a particularly tough evening in the capital, though, and has lost out to Yuri Ribeiro in the last two league games.

He might well have a fight on his hands to get the shirt back.

Ribeiro has done well and was arguably the visitors’ best player against Arsenal, albeit in a more advanced position.

Holding midfield

With his form so far, Ben Watson has become one of the first names on the team-sheet - some turnaround for the 34-year-old. He’s playing his best football since moving to the City Ground and gives the back four an extra layer of protection.

Samba Sow, too, has been brilliant. He’s settled in to English football straight away and has worked well alongside Watson.

Tiago Silva and Brennan Johnson were handed the central midfield roles at the Emirates - as part of a 4-4-1-1 formation - but struggled to really impose themselves on the game.

Johnson is only 18, though, and was making just his fourth senior appearance - plus he was not in his natural position. He will get other chances and does have the potential to be a very good player.

Attacking midfield

Forest did field some of their big guns in this department when they took on the Premier League giants - even if we didn’t really get to see the best of them.

Joao Carvalho has shown before (plenty of times) that he’s a class act, though. The Portuguese magician is still working through his bag of tricks, and if he’s fit, it’s difficult to leave him out of the team.

Joe Lolley, too, has quality in abundance. He just hasn’t quite got going yet this season, and had a quiet evening in the cup.

It was the same for Albert Adomah, who was in the more unusual position of playing up front and didn’t get a great deal of support - so it would be harsh to hold that against him.

Tuesday’s game aside, on current form it’s probably Adomah and Sammy Ameobi who would get the nod for Forest’s strongest XI.

But it’s close. Can never discount Lolley from providing a spark in games and even when not at his attacking best, he puts a real shift in.

Striker

Only one option here: Lewis Grabban. Lamouchi will be keeping his fingers very tightly crossed that nothing happens to the front man.

The Reds do have other players who can provide attacking threat and chip in with goals, but Grabban is very much a key player nevertheless. He's vital.

Rafa Mir is currently sidelined with injury, but even when fit wouldn’t get in ahead of Grabban.

And as much as he did his best on Tuesday night - and can be an option if necessary - Adomah isn’t best suited to playing up front.

Is this Forest’s strongest XI?: Samba, Cash, Dawson, Worrall, Ribeiro, Watson, Sow, Ameobi, Carvalho, Adomah, Grabban.
