Vital new law will allow you to vote this year even if you have coronavirus

People who catch coronavirus will still be able to vote in local elections in May under new rules.

Voters will head to the polls for a bumper crop of elections in England on May 6 after ballots were shelved last year due to the pandemic.

New rules are in place to make sure elections can go ahead safely, with heightened safety measures and voters asked to wear masks and to bring their own pen or pencil.

Anyone who needs to self isolate after testing positive for Covid-19 will be able to apply for an emergency proxy vote up until 5pm on polling day under new changes to the law.

Existing proxy arrangements can be changed at the last minute as well, if the person voting on your behalf falls ill with coronavirus.

People can also apply for postal votes by 5pm on April 20 if they don't want to vote in person for any reason.

There will be a bumper set of votes across England on May 6 for a mixture of councillors, local mayors, regional mayors and police commissioners.

In London, there will be elections for the mayor and assembly, which were scrapped last year.

Cabinet Office Minister Chloe Smith, said: “These elections can and will be delivered in a COVID-secure way and the extended proxy voting rules are a key part of this.

“The new rules will mean that voters who have tested positive for COVID-19, or are self-isolating, can still have their say in these elections without having to leave their home.”

The legislation will be debated in Parliament next month and is expected to come into force in April if backed by MPs.

Campaigning by activists is currently prohibited under the national lockdown, with further guidance due on face-to-face activities.

The Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Senedd are also due to hold elections and separate decisions on emergency proxy voting have been made by the devolved administrations.
