Vital funding agreed for new £205 million village in Nottinghamshire

A huge new Nottinghamshire village where more than 800 homes and a primary school are planned will receive a £3m funding boost after the money was confirmed this week.

The £205m flagship Nottinghamshire County Council Top Wighay Farm project is set to create more than 1,000 jobs.

The 100-acre site, located off the A611, Linby, is currently open fields and plans have been put forward to progress the build.

What has been described as a "neighbourhood centre" could be on the way, too, to potentially house a medical centre.

The school, meanwhile, is expected to provide 315 places.

The £3m will come from the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership that invests in projects benefiting the local area and economy.

Its chair, Elizabeth Fagan, said: "D2N2 has agreed to invest in the Top Wighay Farm scheme in order to unlock the site’s excellent potential to boost our region’s housing stock and unlock more land for commercial development.

“Supporting investment in key infrastructure to act as a stimulus for wider economic growth through housing and employment remains a vital part of ensuring we restart our local economy post-coronavirus.”

Leader of the county council, Councillor Kay Cutts, added: “We welcome the news of this additional £3m investment towards one of our council’s flagship projects.

“The Top Wighay development has the needs of the local community at its core as it will generate more than 1,000 new jobs and invest in community facilities, infrastructure and education facilities, including the creation of new council offices.

“Now, more than ever, major developments like this will help boost the economic prospects of our county over the next decade.”

Work is due to begin in the summer and the funding from D2N2 will go towards infrastructure improvements on the site, including the expansion of a roundabout on the A611 Annesley Road and a new signal-controlled junction to manage traffic flow to and from the site.

A new three-metre wide shared-use footway and cycleway along the A611 will also be created.

The council and Homes England will also fund the development.
