'Vital for us' - Joey Barton explains James Belshaw's move to Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers have signed goalkeeper James Belshaw after a successful trial, the club confirmed on Friday.

Belshaw has joined for an undisclosed fee from Harrogate Town, inking a two-year deal at the Mem.

He will offer cover for Anssi Jaakkola, filling in for the Finn's absences on international leave.

Jaakkola's excursions with Finland – plus his recent injury record and the departure of three senior goalkeepers this summer – has made the back-up role one of Joey Barton's transfer priorities this summer.

"I'm delighted to get James on board," the Rovers boss said.

"His career trajectory itself, continually improving through the leagues shows the kind of ambition and drive we want all players to have who represent Bristol Rovers.

"The experience James has gained through two recent promotions and having played a substantial amount of games last year in league two will be vital for us in achieving our objectives for this season and beyond.

"He will be another excellent addition to our squad”

The 30-year-old played 184 times for Harrogate across a four-year spell, winning promotions from the National League North and National League.

He became available after the Sulphurites brought in Mark Oxley from Southend United as their new number one this summer.

A fortnight on trial at The Quarters followed, featuring an impressive performance against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

And he joins Jaakkola in Rovers' goalkeeping corps officially, alongside teenage talent Jed Ward and recently-appointed coach Tony Warner.

"During his time at Wetherby Road, James Belshaw’s performances have seen him named in the National League North Team of the Year, National League Team of the Year and supporters' club player of the year on two occasions," Harrogate's statement read.

"Off the pitch, Belshaw has played a big part in the local Community, inspiring a generation of young goalkeepers through sessions at our player development centre.

"The departing stopper has undoubtedly been a big part in our success in recent years and for that we would like to place on record our sincere thanks for his efforts.

"All the best, Belly."
