Vital fire-safety barriers missing from some homes in plush new housing estate

Fire-resistant cavity barriers designed to stop the spread of flames in a house fire have been left out of some homes in a plush new development.

Residents at a Persimmon Homes development have been told their properties may be missing the vital fire safety measures.

Now properties at Trevethan Meadows in Liskeard, Cornwall, are being inspected to see if cavity barriers have been correctly installed in their homes.

The barriers, which must be fitted correctly to ensure a property is compliant with Building Regulations, slow the spread of flames in the event of a fire, reports CornwallLive.

But earlier this year Persimmon Homes said it was going to inspect more than 1,000 homes across the South West after it emerged that the barriers were missing from some properties.

Persimmon Homes told residents that the inspections were being carried out as a precautionary measure.

A letter sent to Trevethan Meadows residents by Persimmon Homes last month said: "We have recently become aware that some timber frame properties on your development have not had cavity barriers correctly installed at roof level.

"Cavity barriers are a fire safety measure and whilst they are only one of a number of fire protection measures which are incorporated into your home, we believe it is important that as a precautionary measure, we conduct checks to satisfy ourselves that these have been isolated incidents."

Several people living at the development have reported on social media that their properties have failed the inspection.

It comes after a widespread problem with missing barriers was identified in October last year.

There has been at least one other estate in Cornwall affected. Earlier this year, residents of the Lowen Bre development in Truro received letters warning that their homes may be missing the cavity barriers.

Persimmon Homes has apologised to customers affected and says it is committed to resolving the issue.
