Visually impaired volunteers needed to test new vision monitoring app

Sight loss charity, the Macular Society, is looking for volunteers to test a new at-home vision monitoring app that will be used by patients in between clinic appointments.

Macular disease is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, with 300 people diagnosed every day and the Smartphone app, which is still in development, will use software similar to that found in video games, to assess visual health.

The Macular Society also released its first TV advert this week, highlighting the impact of the degenerative eye condition which results in the loss or blurring of the central field of vision.

The free app has been designed by Okko Health with the hopes of reducing the strain on hospital eye service departments by finding a way for patients to monitor their eye health at home.

The company is calling for volunteers with macular disease to co-design and test the app to ensure it is as accurate and as accessible as possible.

If you have some central vision, use a Smartphone and have 20 minutes to spare each week - Okko Health would like to hear from you.

Volunteers will need to:

  • Have access to a Smartphone / smart device including an iPhone 7 or later, iPad 5 or later, Huawei (any version) or Samsung (any version).

  • Be able to use a Smartphone with their central vision.

  • Have access to a recent eye examination prescription from their opticians or eye doctor (within the last 6-12 months) - and be willing to share this information with Okko Health.

  • Be willing to engage with the app two or more times per week for a few weeks.

If you are interested or have any questions please contact the Macular Society - details can be found on their website here.
