Komodo Island, home to the famous dragon, will require a $1000 membership to visit next year.

The Indonesian island was due to be closed to tourists in January to protect the dragons and their habitat.

However, the government has now said that the island will be open to visitors willing to pay a $1000 premium membership fee, according to state media website Antara.

Those without a premium membership will still be able to see the dragons, but on other nearby islands.

Currently tourists pay around $10 (£8) to visit the Unesco world heritage site- $990 dollars less.

The move comes in the wake of a surge of tourism to the island to see its famous dragon.

In 2018, 176,000 people visited Komodo, up from 44,000 people in 2008.

According to Indonesian government figures, there are 1,727 Komodo dragons living on the island.

They were first declared a protected species in 1915 by the Dutch colonial government.
