Visitors flock to Threave Gardening Show at Castle Douglas National Trust for Scotland property

Visitors flocked to the Threave Gardening Show recently.

Thousands of people headed to Threave Garden and Estate on the outskirts of Castle Douglas to enjoy the spectacular plants and flowers.

There was also an open-air plant sale and, to ensure things were coronavirus-safe, demonstrations could be enjoyed via smartphone.

The National Trust for Scotland’s operations manager for Dumfries and Galloway, Dr Sam Gallacher, said: “It was a great success, it was a really good weekend. The weather was on our side and the garden was looking spectacular.

“It was showcase standard. The team here have been working exceptionally hard over the last two months and it was looking exceptional.

“There were also lots of visitors to the house to see the flower displays that the volunteers had made.

“We have had good feedback from visitors and exhibitors did a roaring trade, I saw people going away with trolleys and bags full of plants.

“Our chief executive, Phil Long, came to visit us on Saturday as this is the first event of its kind that the trust has had since Covid, so it is great for Dumfries and Galloway to be first for anything.”

With Dumfries and Galloway moving to level one of the coronavirus restriction system on Saturday, there were plenty of people taking advantage of the opportunity to get out and about and attend an event for the first time in several months.

Dr Gallacher added: “A lot of people were locals and they hadn’t been to Threave before or hadn’t been in decades, so there was a bit of community renegagement going on.

“For a lot of them it was the first time they had been out to something for some time.”
